Galaxies brighter than given magnitude
Popis
Galaxies brighter than a given magnitude. The source is the UGC catalogue, https://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/W3Browse/galaxy-catalog/ugc.html . The catalogue is claimed to be complete for galaxies brighter than magnitude 14.5; we see that the number of galaxies brighter than mag 14.5 (number N_gal in the header) approximately triples as the magnitude is increased by 1; then it saturates because of incompleteness.
I made three types of plots: projSky_* is the whole sky (the coordinates are RA and DE); Per_et_Tri_ and Vir_et_Com are zoom-ins to one of the most interesting areas on the sky (RA goes negative in the zoom-ins, see the captions). The colour codes the log_10 number density of galaxies per square degree at a given position on the sky. Note that the scale changes as we move to fainter galaxies.
Individual galaxies are shown by small dots. Some selected galaxy clusters are indicated by the magenta stars. These selected clusters include the following galaxies: M 87, NGC 1275 (Perseus cluster), NGC 4489 (Come cluster), NGC 3861 (Leo cluster), NGC 6041, NGC 6160,
UGC 1308 and UGC 1866.
